<br />
Did you know that water foraging bees spread their load on the brood and
‘lash’ their tongues to cool the young? And did you know that nectar
foragers that take the last bit of nectar mark the flower with a
pheromone so foragers that follow won’t bother to stop? Most of us
learned that bees forage for four items: nectar, pollen, water and resin
(propolis). But how do they know what to collect, how much, when, where?
And what does the hive do with these resources? Here’s a in-depth look at
some of the amazing details involved in the dynamic deployment of the
foraging force which can number in the 10's of thousands, and some ways
we can put this info to use as beekeepers. We'll touch on some of the
fascinating research in<i> Wisdom of the Hive</i> (Thomas Seeley) and
<i>The Buzz About Bees</i>(Jurgen Tautz).<br />

One club member discovered a dead hive with 30lbs of honey still in it. Another, who keeps two hives every year, also loses two every winter. She thinks her problem is location -- living in town might expose her bees to more pollutants than they can handle.<br />
<br />
If you lose hives this winter and just can't figure out why but want to go beyond speculation, a great option is to send a sample of dead bees to:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://media.kjonline.com/images/winter+bee+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://media.kjonline.com/images/winter+bee+one.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
Bee Disease Diagnosis<br />
Bee Research Laboratory<br />
Bldg. 476 Room 20<br />
Beltsville Agricultural Research Center - East<br />
Beltsville, MD 20705<br />
<br />
To prepare the sample, collect about 100 of the sick bees in rubbing alcohol. Let them soak overnight. Drain off the alcohol, then put them in a ziplock bag. Put the bag in a small cardboard box so the samples won't get crushed. Mark the box with your NAME, ADDRESS, & BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM so they know where to send the results.<br />
<br />
Best of luck! <br />
Diane, of <a href="http://honeybeesandheather.com/">Honey Bees and Heather Farm</a>, will make her 30-minute <i>Introduction to Pollinators</i> presentation to the Asheville Tree Commission on <b>Tuesday, January 22 around 12:30</b> at the Public Works Building (161 South Charlotte Street, Asheville, NC 28801). <a href="http://cdni.wired.co.uk/620x413/g_j/Honeybee_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://cdni.wired.co.uk/620x413/g_j/Honeybee_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
A new study by researchers from Greek and French universities suggests that bees are able to bite foes that are too small to be stung. The mandibles excrete 2-heptanone during the bite, which acts as a local anaesthetic, which may paralyze the target for up to nine minutes. This might explain bees' ability to "clean" the hive by tossing out predators like varroa mites and wax moths. <br />

"The honey <span class="il">bee</span>

beekeeping (before that term was even really used in <span class="il">bee</span> circles) and
his mentor was the famous Charles Mraz from Vermont who was a truly
epic pioneer in apitherapy (and a gol darn wonderful guy). <b>Beekeepers,

<br /></div>
<div>
<i>BeeSting</i>, a
short film, is a lyrical outpouring of creative force, addressing the
emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges of breast cancer against a
backdrop of the declining <span class="il">bee</span> population and
the burgeoning toxicity of The Earth. BeeSting illustrates the
imbalance of the feminine in our culture; both how it manifests inwardly
with the disease of our breasts, and outwardly with the pollution of
our planet. Combining shadow puppetry and cinematographic techniques,
the story moves between metaphor and realism, blending personal
expression, medicine, humor, poetry, and gratitude. Flier attached for
more information. Award-winning puppeteer Lisa Sturz's courageous
journey with cancer informed this wonderful work.</div>

We are proud to partner with Whole Foods/Greenlife Grocery and are thankful for
their "Share the Buzz" campaign. Together with our area's beekeepers, we
are poised to open the public's eyes a little more to how much each of us can do to
save pollinators in urban environments. We do this TOGETHER - Thank you!Minnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284514922599904811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5258187354252111570.post-68976964549654764912012-09-22T21:51:00.002-04:002012-09-22T21:52:01.914-04:00October BCBC MeetingJoin us the first Monday of this month<br />

<br />
Bob is involved with not only honey production but also the selection and propagation of superior bee stock that survive without the use of harsh chemicals.
He has provided nucs for research at University of Georgia which were used for <a href="http://www.clemson.edu/extension/beekeepers/publications/what_integrated_pest_management_means_for_todays_beekeeper.html">IPM Research.</a><br />
<br />
This past spring 500 nucs were available here in our area - many of which were of our local queen stock which are acclimated to our area.
Greg Rogers, a friend of Bob's, shared that Bob has 1,000+ hives, and is a creative problem solver who shares information openly. Bob is the past president of the Georgia Beekeepers Association and an informative speaker. Jennifer Berry wrote in Bee Culture Magazine that "Bob is always researching and fine tuning ways to become a better beekeeper."<br />
